The Vanier Vikings put an exclamation point on their dominant season with an incredible performance in the final on Tuesday night.

With a loud home crowd behind them, the Vikings rolled to a three-set win over the Central Cyclones to capture the Moose Jaw High School Senior Boys Volleyball League Championship, their first since 2009.

"We were on a mission, so it feels really good, especially on a 12-0 season, we proved our point and that we were hungry for a championship," said Vanier senior Riley Follensbee following the championship win.

The Vikings were the top team in the league a year ago but lost to the Avonlea Eagles in the championship game.

Vanier didn't leave anything to chance this season as they were rolling right from the start of the year and were able to complete the perfect season with a convincing win in the final.

"The kids have worked hard all year and [this win] shows that they're a really consistent squad, we're 11 guys deep and you saw that tonight, we could put people in a lot of different places and it makes tough for opponents to come at you when you have a lot of depth," said Vanier coach Levi Broda.

The Vikings rolled to a 25-11 win over the Cyclones in the first set, they continued that strong performance in the second set with a 25-14 win, and then Vanier finished off the win, edging Central 25-17 in the third set.

"It was nice to get back to the city final, we did lose, but we fought hard and hopefully next year we get back," said Central senior Jaxson Brownell.

With a young team that featured just three grade 12s, the Cyclones are primed to be back in the final again next year. Brownell said they made a lot of progress in the right direction this season.

"We came together as a team, communicating and supporting each other because at the start of the year, we were arguing a bit and we were dysfunctional, but at the end, we brought it together," he said.

The Vikings were led by a stellar group of seniors with Follensbee, Cooper Cole, Ryan Zerff and Keian Klein helping to push the program forward over the past few years.

"We've been together for two years, we got a lot of experience from last year's loss and we're close, we're friends with everybody, we do team-bonding and that's made us better on the court," said Follensbee.

It was an incredible night overall for Vanier Collegiate with both senior teams winning in straight sets after the Spirits opened the night with a three-set win over the Toilers at Peacock in the girls' final.

"It was a really special night for our school and it really made an impact being able to see what the girls did at Peacock and being able to come and take care of business here in our gym," said Broda.

The Vikings still have some work left to do as they will travel to Melville this weekend for the SHSAA 4A Boys Volleyball Provincial Championship.
