REGINA — Liam Murphy banged in a rebound in front 2:58 into overtime to lift the Acadie-Bathurst Titan to a 4-3 win over the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday at the 100th Memorial Cup.

The loss for Swift Current was the eighth straight by the Western Hockey League champions at the major junior national championship.

"It was a tough one, but anything can happen in this tournament, so our mindset is on the next game," said Broncos captain Glenn Gawdin. "Every team here is good and is here for a reason, so saying that, you can't take any team lightly."

The win is the first at the Memorial Cup for the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, who were able to comeback twice on the Broncos during the game.

"For us it was a huge win right at the start of the tournament and especially when we were trailing 3-2," said Titan head coach Mario Pouliot. "Our two PK goals made a huge difference for us, but I'm really happy with the way that we competed, we battled all game long and we found a way to score the big goal in overtime."

The Broncos took a 3-2 lead into the third period, which was something they were able to close out for much of the WHL Playoffs on their way to the Ed Chynoweth Cup. However, the Titan put together a strong third period and tied the game early in the frame when defenceman Adam Holwell scored Acadie-Bathurst's second shorthanded goal of the game, just 5:51 into the third.

"The two shorthanded goals were huge, we couldn't bury on the power play today, so those two goals were huge as we had to equalize the game too," said Titan captain Jeffrey Truchon-Viel, who finished with four assists in the win.

Truchon-Viel swung the momentum of the game with two big hits on one shift in the second period, the second one which knocked out Broncos sniper Tyler Steenbergen, who didn't return to the game.

"That's just part of my game, (the physical game) is what I do every game and the guys were pretty pumped after that and we got the momentum more after that," said Jeffrey-Viel.

Broncos head coach Manny Viveros stated after the game that Steenbergen was day-to-day and refused to comment further on the injury.

"He's a huge player, so losing a guy of his caliber is huge for our team, but saying that, it makes room for guys to step up and fill his shoes," said Gawdin.

Swift Current moved Max Patterson and then Beck Malenstyn onto the line with Gawdin and Aleksi Heponiemi for the third period and overtime. However the Broncos seemed to lose steam after Steenbergen left the game.

"I thought we made some uncharacteristic mistakes in the game, I thought we gave up more odd man rushes in this game than we did in 26 games of playoffs before and that's something that we normally don't do and put us on our heels a lot of times too unnecessarily," said Viveros.

"The two shorthanded goals, I thought all four goals that they scored against us they just outworked us in areas where we just didn’t work hard enough to get back again."

Titan forward Samuel Asselin, who had just three goals during their 20-game playoff run opened the scoring 8:02 into the game.

Swift Current tied the game with a power play goal from Tyler Steenbergen just 4:16 later. A run of three straight penalties for the Titan over the final ten minutes of the first swung the momentum in the Broncos’ favour.

Giorgio Estephan finished off a nice feed from Tanner Nagel with 1:01 to play in the first period to put the Broncos in front 2-1.

The score stayed the way for much of the second period despite the two teams trading chances throughout the frame. With the Broncos on the power play in the period, the puck was cleared out of the zone, Asselin raced after it and beat Skinner with a nice move to tie the game at 2-2.

As they have done all playoffs, the Broncos some how found a way to respond before the end of the period as Nagel’s strong forecheck set up Estephan for his second of the game.

Holwell scored shorthanded early in the third and the Titan controlled much of the frame, outshooting the Broncos 13-8 in the period.

Acadie-Bathurst ended up outshooting Swift Current 39-27 in the game with Skinner being forced to make 35 saves, while Titan goalie Evan Fitzpatrick was solid with 24 stops.

Broncos defenceman Colby Sissons said they need to up their physical game moving forward in the tournament after the loss, "We allowed a lot of odd-man rushes on missed assignments. We need to break their routes, they have skilled defencemen, so try to get in their way and have a good third man high," he said.

"We've got to learn from it and move on."

The Titan will be back on the ice on Sunday to face the host Regina Pats. Puck drops at 5 p.m.

Swift Current gets a day to regroup before squaring off with the OHL champion Hamilton Bulldogs, who are also coming off a loss after falling 3-2 to the Pats in the tournament opener.
