Moose Jaw’s Sawyer Buettner and the Regina Thunder extended their winning streak to four games with a 29-24 win over the Winnipeg Rifles at Mosaic Stadium on Saturday night.

Buettner threw for 382 yards and two touchdowns in the win. He sits second in the Prairie Football Conference with 1,304 yards on the season, which is just four yards behind Calgary’s Bailey Wasdal with one less game played.

The Thunder led 17-10 at halftime, but the Rifles battled back to take an 18-17 lead in the third quarter.

Buettner found fellow Peacock grad Levi Paul – who had eight catches for 80 yards in the game – in the end zone for a five-yard touchdown to move the Thunder back in front 23-18 with 9:18 to play.

The back-and-forth was just beginning however as the Rifles pulled back in front, 24-23, with 1:59 remaining, but Regina was able to move the ball down field in the two-minute drill and running back Victor St. Pierre Laviolette scored with under 30 seconds remaining for the win.

St. Pierre Laviolette’s touchdown capped off a massive performance that saw him finish with 214 yards rushing and 26 receiving on 25 touches with two touchdowns in the win.

The Thunder are now 4-1 on the year and remain tied with the Saskatoon Hilltops for second place in the PFC. The Edmonton Huskies are in first at 5-0.

Regina will travel to Edmonton this Sunday for a showdown with the Huskies.
