The Moose Jaw Warriors were big winners on Wednesday as the Western Hockey League announced the 2018-19 conference award winners. Three Warriors will be up for league awards after winning Eastern Conference awards. Also, three players were named to the conference all-star teams.

Josh Brook was named Eastern Conference Defenceman of the Year after finishing tied for the league lead with 75 points this season.

"It means a lot, there's a lot of great defencemen in the league and to be named the top one out of all of them feels awesome," said the Montreal Canadiens prospect.

"I wanted to take my game to the next level, the points came with that and just kept improving throughout the season."

Brook will be up against Spokane Chiefs defenceman Ty Smith for the league award.

Brook was also selected as a first-team all-star along with Tristin Langan, while Jett Woo was named a second-team all-star.

Brayden Tracey led the entire Canadian Hockey League in rookie scoring with 36 goals and 81 points in 66 games this season. It was no surprise that he came away with the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Year award.

"It's pretty surreal to be recognized by the league like that. Obviously, it's pretty special to me, my family and the organization, but it doesn't come without the team or my linemates," said Tracey.

The 17-year-old forward played much of the season on the Warriors' top line with Langan and Justin Almeida. Tracey said that they both deserve a lot of credit for pushing him to another level, "They're on me all the time about competing harder, you've got to win those battles, and once I got that done, the year started turning a bit for me," said Tracey.

Kelowna Rockets forward Lassi Thomson is the Western Conference nominee for the league award.

Almeida took home the Eastern Conference's Most Sportsmanlike Player award after finishing the season with 111 points and just 14 penalty minutes.

The Pittsburgh Penguins prospect said that staying disciplined isn't something that he focuses on much, "It just happens. You just focus on playing and that stuff happens," he said.

Almeida added that it was pretty special to have so many Warriors honoured with awards.

"We have some of the best players in the league and a lot of people on our team have had great seasons, so when those guys get recognized, it's nice to see," said Almeida.

Almeida will go up against Portland Winterhawks forward Cody Glass for the league honour.

While the Warriors were well represented in the awards, the players that were snubbed might have been more noticeable.

Despite finishing tied for the league lead with 53 goals and one point off the league scoring title, Langan wasn't picked as the Eastern Conference's Player of the Year, losing out to Edmonton's Trey Fix-Wolansky, who had 16 fewer goals and 11 fewer points.

"I don't think it's a snub, Fix-Wolansky is a great player and I'm happy that I got onto the first all-star team, it's a great accomplishment," said Langan.

While he didn't want to call it a snub, Langan did say that he will be using that as motivation for him heading into the playoffs, "Knowing that you come that close and don't get it, it's tough," he said. "It's going to be a good playoffs and I'm ready to work hard."

Almeida was also left off both all-star teams despite leading the WHL with 78 assists and finishing third in the league in points this season.

The WHL Conference Awards are voted on by the WHL General Managers and Head Coaches.

The league awards will be presented on May 1 at the awards luncheon in Red Deer.
