The Sunningdale boys and King George girls capped off a season of work with a city championship last week.

Peacock Collegiate was the host site for the Prairie South Elementary Basketball Championship games last Friday.

In the Girls A Final, the King George Cougars knocked off the Sunningdale Grizzlies, 50-48 in overtime, in a back-and-forth championship game.

Feona Tolentino powered King George to the win with 22 points, while Kiera Luman had nine points. Summer Okerstrom had 14 points in the loss for Sunningdale.

King George jumped out to a 14-12 lead after one quarter, but Sunningdale was able to cut that down to one point after the second quarter.

The third quarter was low scoring, but the Grizzlies were able to pull in front of the Cougars for a 32-28 lead. King George battled back in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 40-40 and force overtime.

Tolentino scored four points in the overtime period to lift the Cougars to the win.

In the Boys A Final, the Sunningdale Grizzlies pulled off a hard fought 50-45 win over the Prince Arthur Panthers to walk away with the championship.

Kalil Chin had 19 points to lead the way for the Grizzlies in the championship game. Brennan Patterson and Amil Chin added eight points each in the win.

Mohamed J. led the charge for the Panthers in the loss with a game-high 26 points. 

The Grizzlies came out of the gate hot and jumped out to a 16-10 lead after the first quarter. Sunningdale played a strong defensive game in the second quarter, holding Prince Arthur to two points to take a 23-12 lead at halftime.

A back-and-forth third quarter saw the Panthers close the gap to 39-30 heading into the fourth. Prince Arthur continued to push, but Sunningdale had an answer along the way and held on for the five-point win.
