After dropping their opening game on Friday, the Vanier Spirits went on a roll at SoccerFest over the weekend.

The Spirits won their last three games, including a 2-0 win over Regina Luther on Saturday afternoon, to capture the Consolation Bracket at the annual tournament hosted here in Moose Jaw.

“We had great energy, worked together all weekend and had great team work,” said Vanier grade 9 Payton Wionzek.

The Spirits lost an 11-0 game to Regina LeBoldus in their opening game on Friday morning that dropped them down into the Consolation Bracket. They started their run against Regina Sheldon Williams with a 2-0 win Friday and then up ended Notre Dame 3-1 on Saturday morning.

Vanier carried that success over against Regina Luther, scoring twice in the first half and securing the win in the second half.

“After the game against LeBoldus, we picked it up and realized that we can work our positions well and figure it out,” said Vanier grade 11 Erin Ferner. “That was a good challenge for the first game and then we picked it up after that.”

Coming out of the weekend, the Spirits feel that they were able to gain some confidence with the success over that three-game stretch.

“Over this weekend, we worked more on our communication and over the course of the season we will continue to work on that,” said Wionzek.

The Central Cyclones made it into the quarterfinals of the Championship Bracket with an 8-1 win over Balgonie Greenall on Friday morning. However, they would drop their next two games, falling 6-1 to Regina Campbell on Friday afternoon and then lost 7-0 to the Swift Current Ardens on Saturday morning.

In the loss to Swift Current, Central kept the game tight through the first half, holding Swift Current to just a 2-0 lead before they pulled away in the second half.

“In the first half, we had pretty good pressure, we were working together and our communication was pretty good too,” said Central’s Ariet Okouri.

Central was pretty banged up by the end of the game with a short bench and that took a toll on the team’s ability to stick with the Ardens.

“We had a bunch of injured players, but they toughed it through for the first half and they eventually wore out,” said Central’s Didamo Omot.  “The team is closer after the weekend because we know each others games better and how to play with each other.”

After losing their first two games, the Peacock Tornadoes finished the tournament strong on Saturday with a pair of 2-1 wins over Yorkton Sacred Heart and Regina Sheldon Williams. They had lost 8-0 to Regina O’Neill in their opening game on Friday and then dropped a 7-2 game to Yorkton Regional in the afternoon.

The Regina Campbell Tartans won the SoccerFest title with a 4-0 win over the Prince Albert Carlton Crusaders in the final on Saturday afternoon.

The next girls soccer action is coming up on Tuesday when Vanier takes on Weyburn and Peacock battles Swift Current at Sunningdale Fields at 4:30 p.m.

The Moose Jaw High School Boys Soccer League is on the field on Monday with the Vanier Vikings facing off with the Central Cyclones at 4:30 p.m. at the Canada Games Field.
