For the second straight year, the Murray Stroeder rink is on top at the end of the annual Moose Jaw Men’s Bonspiel.

Stroeder and company topped the Stan Barnsley rink, 9-5, in the final of the 116th edition of the longest running annual bonspiel in Saskatchewan on Saturday at the Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre.

“Really good weekend, it was fun, the guys were good, so it was great,” said Stroeder after the final win.

A six-point second end set Stroeder up nicely in the championship game as he was able to jump in front 6-1 and then hold off Barnsley for the rest of the game.

“That was the turning point for sure,” Stroeder said. “It’s always tough, you don’t know how to play it after that, so we got ourselves into a jackpot a few times and luckily we made the shot in the seventh when it counted.”

Stroeder added two in the fifth and then drew to the button against three Barnsley stones with his final shot in the seventh to end the game.

“We were looking at three and the best we could have done was get rid of two of them with a hit, so the draw was a chance for one and the worst it was going to do is cost us one if I missed it, so it was nice to pull it off for the repeat,” said Stroeder.

The spiel featured 16 teams from around the province hitting the ice on Friday and Saturday. There was curlers of all ages taking part.
