A perfectly timed time-out was just what the Vanier Spirits needed to right the ship on Tuesday night.

After winning a tightly contested first set, the Spirits found themselves trailing the Peacock Toilers, 10-2, in the second set, but following a time-out, the Spirits battled back, overtaking Peacock, winning that set and eventually the match.

Vanier put together a three-set sweep of the Toilers in the Moose Jaw High School Senior Girls Volleyball League's championship game at Peacock Collegiate.

"The coaches called a time-out and really pepped us up and we refocused, got one pass, got a hit and then just kept going from there," said Spirits senior Jenna Meili.

"It feels so amazing, we've been working really hard this year and it feels good to win, it feels really good."

This is the first league championship for Vanier since 1993.

"I knew that they had it in them to come and do a job and we didn't take the foot off the pedal, we passed well, we served well and they just executed beautifully tonight," said Vanier head coach Leanne Meili.

"We started in grade 10 and I knew it would be a process to get to this point and it doesn't happen overnight, these girls worked a lot, they went to camps, played club and they deserve it, they earned this win."

Vanier featured five key seniors on their roster with Jenna Meili, Madisyn Ferraton, Madeline Sills, Madison Jordison and Allison Grajczyk-Jelinski leading the way this season.

"We're all really close, actually two of the grade 12s here have been playing together since elementary school so it's been a long time," said Meili.

The Spirits and Toilers were the class of the league this season as they both entered the playoffs with 10-2 records and cruised into the league final with straight-set wins in last week's semifinals.

Peacock didn't get the end result that they were looking for as they couldn’t slow down Vanier once they started rolling.

"It's kind of disappointing coming into this game, knowing that we've grown so much as a team and now to lose to Vanier, one of the teams that we've beaten, it hurts a little, but they played awesome," said Peacock senior Jenna Helland.

"Coming into this game, I know they were well prepared and they started with that momentum ahead of us and that carried them through."

Vanier won a back-and-forth first set, 25-23, and then mounted the big comeback to take the second set, 25-18. The Spirits kept their foot on the gas after that and took the third set, 25-12, to capture the title.

Meili said she didn't expect to have the dominating night that they did, "I thought that we would have more of a battle there, Peacock is an amazing team and we just really came out there, gave it our all and it really showed out there," she said.

"We really came out and played as a team tonight, we brought a lot of energy and we really deserved it."

With the Vikings also winning the boys title later in the night, it's the first time in Vanier's school history that they've held both titles in the same season.
