For the first time since last April, the Saskatchewan Rush have lost on their home turf.

The Rush dropped a 16-15 overtime game to the Buffalo Bandits in a surprising National Lacrosse League upset. It was the first loss of the season for Saskatchewan and their first loss at home since Apr. 15, 2017.

Saskatchewan controlled the game early, jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to two goals from Ben McIntosh, as well as markers from Robert Church, Mark Matthews, Ryan Keenan and Chris Corbeil.

The Bandits responded early in the second quarter with back-to-back goals before Church picked up his second of the night. Jeremy Thompson and McIntosh found the back of the net in the final 40 seconds of the first half to give the Rush a 9-3 lead.

Matthews picked up his second and Church completed his hat trick in the opening five minutes of the second half, but it was all Buffalo after that, they scored four times over the final 8:31 of the third to cut the Rush’s lead down 12-8.

The Bandits scored three straight goals to open the fourth quarter and found the back of the net seven times in the frame to tie the game at 15-15. That sent things to overtime.

Buffalo’s Pat Saunders scored two minutes into the extra frame to give the Bandits the upset win.

Matthews finished with two goals and eight points in the loss, while Church posted three goals and five points, and Keenan potted two goals and five points.

Evan Kirk was peppered with 32 shots in the second half and made 42 saves overall in the game. The Rush put 51 shots on the Bandits’ net.

The loss drops the Rush’s record to 4-1 on the year, while the Bandits improve to 3-3.

The Rush are back in action next Saturday when they head to Calgary for their first meeting this season against the rival Roughnecks.
