The Saskatchewan Roughriders made a few big moves in their backfield right before the opening of training camp on Sunday in Saskatoon. One was expected and one came as a surprise.

2017's leading rusher Cameron Marshall was released after failing his medical before the start of camp.

"Certainly he's a good player, he was one of the best blockers, one of the best players that we had last year, so we're hoping that Zac Stacy and some of those guys with experience can fill that hole," said Riders head coach Chris Jones after the team's first practice of camp.

The Riders also suspended running back Trent Richardson, he wasn't expected for the start of training camp due to personal reasons.

National defensive lineman Eddie Steele and long snapper Jorgen Hus were also added to the suspended list before the camp.

National kicker Tyler Crapigna and fullback Spencer Moore were added to the veteran injured list, while linebacker Kevin Francis was moved to the one-game injured list.

The Riders also signed seven players before the start of camp and added territorial junior, national offensive lineman Logan Ferland from the Regina Thunder. International offensive lineman Marcus Oliver was signed on Sunday, but released by the team on Monday.

The Riders continue practices throughout the week in Saskatoon. They will be at SMF Field at Gordie Howe Sports Complex on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
