The Moose Jaw Warriors trailed by two goals twice, but found a way to get a point on Tuesday night against the Saskatoon Blades.

Moose Jaw scored twice in the final nine minutes of regulation to send the game to overtime before losing 5-4 to Saskatoon at Mosaic Place.

“We battled, we tried to come back in the hockey game and this stings a little bit, but definitely a well fought game for most of it,” Warriors defenceman Denton Mateychuk said after the game.

The single point puts Moose Jaw, Brandon and Saskatoon in a three-way tie for fourth place in the Eastern Conference heading into the final weekend before the Christmas break.

Ryder Korczak had two goals and four points in the loss for the Warriors, while Mateychuk and Jagger Firkus picked up two assists each.

Moose Jaw’s second period struggles stung them again as the Blades scored four of their five goals in the middle frame.

The Warriors have now been outscored 42-28 in the second period this season and are 1-12-2-0 when trailing after 40.

“It hasn’t been good, I don’t know if it’s the far end of the rink or what the deal is, but it hasn’t been nice to us thus far,” Warriors assistant coach Gord Burnett said.

“Our second period has definitely been our weakest point,” Mateychuk added. “That’s something that we’ve been trying to key in on because we know we’re playing good in the first period, just you gotta play a full 60 minutes.”

After a scoreless first period, the second period saw a flurry of action at both ends.

Korczak opened the scoring 5:11 into the frame, grabbing his own rebound and burying his ninth of the season.

The Blades struck back just over three minutes later when Jayden Wiens did the same thing, corralling his own rebound and beating a sprawled out Carl Tetachuk.

Brandon Lisowsky would put the Blades up 2-1 just over two minutes later and then follow that up with another goal at 13:45 to make it a two-goal lead for Saskatoon.

Moose Jaw cut the lead back down to one when Cole Jordan found a rebound in the crease and deposited it into the net for his first of the season with just under five minutes left in the second.

Lisowsky wasn’t done though, he finished off the hat trick with less than three minutes to play in the middle frame to put the Blades up 4-2 after 40.

The Warriors continued to fight in the third period and ended up outshooting the Blades, 12-7, in the frame.

Moose Jaw finally broke through with 9:20 left in the game as Korczak scored his second of the night and tenth of the season to make it a one-goal game.

With their net empty, the Warriors found the equalizer as Martin Rysavy banged home a rebound in front for his fifth of the season, sending the game to overtime.

In the extra frame, the Blades capitalized on the neutral zone turnover and Tristen Robins won the game for Saskatoon just 35 seconds into overtime.

Tetachuk made 25 saves in the loss, while Austin Elliott turned away 35 shots to win his first career WHL start for the Blades.

Both teams were 0-for-3 with the man advantage.

The Warriors will now return to the ice coming up on Friday in Regina to open a weekend home-and-home series with the Pats. The two rivals meet on Saturday at Mosaic Place in the final game before the Christmas break.
