Adam Strueby burst out of the gate and led the pack the entire way on Friday morning as he set a new record in the five-kilometre race during the 2016 Moose Jawg charity road race in Wakamow Valley.

“We took it out really hard and then just kind of kept going, I was expecting for a wall to come and it just didn't really come, so I just kept going,” said Strueby.

Strueby finished with a time of 14:29 to set a new high mark in the 5k race.

The record was a goal of the University of Regina runner heading into the event after winning last year and he felt like everything went as planned.

“I had broken my foot in March, so today has just been about coming back and I think I ran about 25 seconds faster than I did last year here, so I’m pretty happy with it,” he said.

Moose Jaw’s Mike Tighe won the 10k race once again this year, finishing with a time of 34:33, which was just under three minutes back of his record time from 2004.

The race started with the runners grouped tightly, but Strueby and Regina’s Matt Johnson pulled away from the pack and started to battle out on their own.

Strueby was eventually able to pull away and finish 25 seconds ahead of Johnson for the win.

“It was at about the 2k mark I kind of just put a little surge in to see how he was feeling and he didn’t come with me and then I was just by myself,” said Strueby.  “We went out really hard, we came through a K and we were surprised, but we did the turnaround and everyone was way back, so it was just us.”

Saskatoon’s Brittany Elliott won the women’s 5k with a time of 18:06, while Katelyn Silversides of Regina won the women’s 10k, finishing in 37:31.

There was close to 400 runners taking part in the annual Canada Day tradition, plus an additional 85 kids that took part in the Runt Run before the main race.  Click here for full results.
