The Peacock Toilers reign on top of the Moose Jaw High School Senior Girls Basketball League continued on Tuesday night.

Peacock won 86-33 over the Central Cyclones in the title game at Sask Polytech, capturing their eighth straight championship.

Defence was the name of the game for Peacock throughout the game as they held Central to single digit points in each of the final three quarters.

“That's definitely how we get started, when we bring the intensity up and energy up on defence then everything just goes right to our offence,” said Peacock senior Katherine McDougall, who had seven points in the win.

Peacock led 24-11 after the first quarter and 51-20 by halftime. They really locked down defensively in the second half, holding the Cyclones to just 13 points over the final 20 minutes.

“That's been our focus all year, our offence starts on the defensive side of the ball, so we try to get after it defensively, leading to some easy lay-ups and easy offence for us,” said Peacock head coach Craig McDougall.

Piper Ingalls led all scorers with 24 points in the win for Peacock, while Anna Maelde added 15 points and Megan MacDonald added eight points.

Central had a great regular season, but couldn't find a way to breakthrough the Peacock defence consistently enough to keep up in the final.

“We prepared pretty well for what Peacock would throw at defensively and we never ended up running what we needed to,” said Central head Tianna Adams. “That really hurt us that we didn't execute when we needed to and then on top of that, Peacock shot the lights out and it's hard to defend against a team that shoots that well.”

Cyclones junior Katie Coulson and sophomore Alexa Watterson finished with eight points each in the loss. Emily Blackmore chipped in with six points.

The Cyclones will now turn their attention to advancing to Hoopla as they prepare to host a 4A girls regional tournament. Central is the fourth ranked team in the province.

“We're hoping that this game will be a catalyst for the girls to really get hungry and get after it,” said Adams. “This is the time of year when it's a war and it's whether or not the girls want to go to battle, we'll find out this weekend.”

Peacock is the second-ranked team in the 4A girls classification and will also be hosting a regional tournament this weekend.

Katherine McDougall said that they need to carry over the intensity from this final into the weekend, “If we bring this intensity into regionals, we'll have a good game and that will help us keep it rolling right into Hoopla,” she said.

The Vanier Spirits will be Melfort for regionals as well this weekend. Click here for the full schedules.
