She only started wrestling this year, but Peacock Collegiate's Myra Szabo put together a medal-winning performance this past weekend at the 2018 SHSAA wrestling provincial championship.

Szabo won a bronze medal in the female 80-kilogram weight class as the lone local wrestlers to capture some hardware at provincials in Saskatoon.

“I'm very happy with that, I didn't think I'd be able to do it, so I'm pretty stoked on it,” said Szabo.

Danaye Holynski from Saskatoon Tommy Douglas picked up the gold medal in the weight class, while Saskatoon Bishop Mahoney's Kiara Willick took silver. Szabo said she was pretty surprised with how she was able to perform against the province's best.

“I lost my first match, so I wasn't sure how it was going to, so I didn’t think I'd be able to medal, but I ended up getting on a roll after that,” Szabo said. “I had to win out the rest of them, got on a roll to get the medal.”

This is Szabo's first year wrestling and she said she's really taken to the sport.

“It feels really good to get a (provincial) medal in my first year,” she said. “I put in a lot of hard work and had some really good coaching.”

Szabo is in grade 11, so she will have another chance next year to top her bronze medal performance.

Fellow Peacock wrestler Kassandra Loucks claimed a seventh place finish in the female 68kg weight class.

On the male side, Peacock's Justin Wiens was seventh in the male 56kg class, while Kyle Yamniuk also placed seventh in the male 59kg class.

Peacock's Tristan Kuntz was seventh in the male 65kg class. He said his first provincial trip was a good experience and will no doubt help him moving forward.

“It didn't go quite as well as I hoped it would, but I learned a few things, you learn more from your losses than you do from your wins,” Kuntz said.

“It showed me what more I could work on and how much more the other guys would put in and I have to match that to be able to do as well as they did.”

Peacock's Dylan Yamniuk and Ethan La Rose finished tied for seventh in the male 69kg class.

La Rose said he didn't perform as well as he liked, but he had moments that are encouraging for him, “I think I showed some dominance in my matches, even the ones that I lost,” he said.

The grade 11 wrestler added that he grew a lot this year and is hoping to use that going into next year.

“I'm a lot more aggressive with my leg takedowns instead of waiting for the other guy to attack,” he said. “I'm just a lot more aggressive and dominant than last year.”
