One young local runner was holding her own with the adults over the weekend at the 15th annual Moose Jawg Charity Road Race on Canada Day.

10-year-old Jaydn Palaschuk took top spot in the female 19-and-under category in the 5k race at the Moose Jawg, finishing with a time of 20:20.

“I followed the fast people that were ahead of me and just tried to keep up with them,” said Palaschuk.

“I had lots of energy left to sprint at the end.”

The winning time in the 5k race was just six minutes faster than Palaschuk and was a record-setting time by a runner with the University of Regina, Adam Strueby.

Palaschuk ran in the Moose Jawg for the first time two years ago and she was able to improve on her time by five minutes this time around.

“I run with my dad and we have cross country and track at school, so that’s helped me,” said Palaschuk.

The local athlete also plays hockey with the AAA AHA Titans spring team, which lost only two games during their season and captured the titles at tournaments in Brandon and Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Palaschuk is also a dancer at the Doris Sitter School of Dance.

For her efforts, Palaschuk was named this week’s Mix 103 and Winmar Athlete of the Week.  If you know a local athlete that we should feature as our Athlete of the Week, fill us in by email at mjsports@goldenwestradio.com.
