The Moose Jaw Novice Mustangs 1 returned home from Medicine Hat this past weekend with a little extra hardware.

The Mustangs knocked off the Medicine Hat Sun Devils, 8-7 in overtime, to capture gold at the LAX to the Max Novice Tournament in Alberta.

Ryder Gilroy scored a hat trick and four points, including the overtime winner for the Mustangs in the gold medal game on Sunday. Brodyn Pladson added four goals and Peyton Watt had the other marker for the Mustangs in the final win.

The Mustangs went 3-0 in the round robin over the weekend to advance into the gold medal game. 

They beat the Medicine Hat Sun Devils 1, 9-1, in their opening game with Pladson and Gilroy picking up a hat trick each, and Bennet Burns, Cooper Bruce and Hayden Nidesh potting the other three goals.

Moose Jaw rolled to a 12-3 win over the Calgary Axemen Bandits in their next game, led by four goals from Gilroy and a hat trick and five points from Pladson. Ryder Widdup, Roman Markin, Nidesh and Bruce also scored in the win.

The Mustangs finished the round robin by topping the Swift Current Rampage, 9-6. Pladson scored four more goals, while Gilroy had two goals and three points. Bruce also found the back of the net twice, while Burns picked up a goal and two points, and Markin had two helpers.

The Mustangs 2 were also in Medicine Hat and posted a 1-2 record in the round robin. They beat the Calgary Hornets, 10-5; and lost 8-4 to the Cranbrook Outlaws, 8-4, and the Medicine Hat Sun Devils, 8-3.

Back to league action on Tuesday, the Mustangs 1 scored a 10-3 win over the Weyburn Thrashers 1 to finish the regular season with an 11-0-1 record in the South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League.
