Moose Jaw's Kirk Mullen will be heading to the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

The local product was one of 20 players selected by the Saskatchewan Hockey Association to represent Team Saskatchewan in the men's hockey tournament from Feb. 15-Mar. 3, 2019 in Red Deer, AB.

“It's a huge honour for me to play against, and with, amazing players and I'm super honoured and humbled to do it,” Mullen told DiscoverMooseJaw.com on Tuesday.

“I've just been putting in hard work for the past couple of months and I thought they just recognized that and chose me to be on the team.”

Mullen, who was selected in the sixth round by his hometown Moose Jaw Warriors in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft, will join fellow Warriors' prospect goalie Brett Mirwald on Team Saskatchewan for the Games.

Mullen said his experience at the Warriors’ Development Camp and Training Camp over the summer really helped set him up for the season that he's been having.

“I just took it all in, learned how much it took to compete at that level and I just took notes on all the little things that the veteran players did and it really helped me,” said Mullen. “I've modelled my game after some of the Warriors' players and it's really helped me.”

In 19 games this season with the Prairie Hockey Academy's Elite 15 Cougars, Mullen has a team-leading 12 goals and 27 points.

"I trained over the summer really hard and mostly my teammates have helped over the past couple of months to do as good as I'm doing, so that really helps," he said.

"I've worked on my quickness, just getting to the puck quicker and going into the corner more and being the first guy there to get the puck."

The 2019 Canada Winter Games will be held over the course of three weeks in Red Deer. There are still a few months to go before the Games open, but Mullen said he's already thinking about what it will be like to play against the country's best.

"It's going to be awesome, it's going to be an experience that I bring with me throughout my life and always remember," he said.

Mullen returns to the ice with P.H.A. this weekend as they travel to Edmonton for four games in three days, starting on Friday morning against the Okanagan Hockey Academy.
