The first gold medal for a Moose Jaw athlete at the 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games went to speed skater Molly Morris.

Morris captured gold during the female 200-metre on Tuesday, finishing with a time of 23.505 seconds to just edge out Saskatoon’s Heather Harrison by 0.081 seconds.

This is the third gold medal for Team South West at the Games, bringing their medal total to 12 after two days of competition in North Battleford.

Morris won her preliminary heat, but then placed second in the semifinals before posting a blazing time in the final to finish on top of the podium.

Morris had a seventh place finish in the female 1,500m and a 23rd place finish in the female 400m so far at the games. She will wrap up her competition on Wednesday with the 3,000m and the relay 2,000m.

Other medal winners for Team South West on Tuesday:

Pense’s Kolbi Fenrick earned her second medal of the games on Tuesday, picking up a bronze along with Moose Jaw’s Abby Dore and Pense’s Madie Prokopetz for Team South West in the female judo team competition.

The male team of Pense’s Harm Haase, Swift Current’s Ghrandozz Aguilar and Conner Hammer also scored a bronze medal in the judo team event on Tuesday. Haase and Aguilar had won individual gold medals on Monday.
