Moose Jaw's Hunter Morgan only started playing football a few years ago, but he's already among the best in the province.

Morgan received some big news recently as he was named to Football Saskatchewan's Under-18 team, which compete in the Football Canada Cup in Calgary next month.

"It's very exciting, I can't wait to represent Team Sask and Moose Jaw in the Canada Cup this year," said Morgan.

The Central Collegiate linebacker started playing football in grade nine and has been able to progress each season to the point that he will now get to test himself against the best players that the country has to offer.

Morgan said he was confident heading into the Team Saskatchewan selection camp and that paid off.

"I played spring league this year, so I had a lot of the coaches from my spring league at the tryout, so they knew me pretty well and I thought I had a good tryout," he said.

Morgan was a member of the Saskatchewan Selects U17 team that won the International Pigskin Classic in Texas back in February, so this won't be his first taste of high level competition.

Getting those extra reps with the Selects and in the Regina Minor Football Spring League really helped Morgan take the next step with his game.

"Playing football all winter gives you an advantage over someone who doesn't play at all," he said. "Selects was great coaching, I learned a lot from that, and then Spring League, this is the first year I played it, and it was a super good experience, all junior and university coaches, so I learned a lot of new things.

"I feel like I've become a better hitter over the past year. In my grade nine year, I wasn't too good and then in grade 10, I started to play better and this year, I got some good coaching and with Selects, Coach Zeljko (Stefanovic) was into hitting and contact and that helped me become more aggressive on the field."

Morgan added that his focus over the next few weeks will be to do what he needs to do to be ready to play at his best in Calgary.

The Football Canada Cup runs July 15-22.
