Moose Jaw's Marc-Andre Doyon wants to prove that he's among the country's best as he gets set for a big week ahead.

Doyon will be representing Saskatchewan in long track speed skating at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, which get underway with the opening ceremonies on Friday night.

"I'm super excited, I'm not too nervous, I'm [treating] it like a normal competition just on a way bigger scale with different athletes, but right now the only thing going through my mind is excitement," said Doyon.

This won't be Doyon's first time on the national stage as he competed at the 2019 Canadian Junior Long Track Championships last month, finishing 13th in the 500-metre, 21st in the 1,500m, 22nd in the 1,000m, and 27th in the 5,000m.

Doyon also racked up a pair of first-place finishes at the Regina Long Track meet last month.

He said focusing on the little details will be the biggest key for him, "I really can't rush any technical aspect, I have to just let it happen, skate properly, skate smart and just let things happen, let everything I've been training and working on this whole year come to mind," said Doyon.

Doyon will have a busy schedule over the next week in Red Deer, he competes in the 1,500-metre on Saturday, the 500m and Team Pursuit on Sunday, the 5,000m on Tuesday and then finally, the 1,000m and Mass Start on Wednesday.

"We have some early mornings, so going to bed earlier and eating well is super important, especially on our day-off to stay recovered and regain some energy," he said.

Thousands of athletes from across the country will be taking part in the Games. While he's been on the national stage before, Doyon said that he's excited to take in everything that the Games have to offer.

"I’m super excited to go watch other people at this high level compete in their sport and encouraging them," he said.

Doyon will be joined by four other Moose Jaw athletes at the Games. Kirk Mullen will be suiting up for Team Saskatchewan in men's hockey during the first week, while Raine Eberl and Ryann Handley will compete in figure skating and the Skylar Ackerman rink will be representing Saskatchewan in women's curling during the second week of competition.

The opening ceremonies kick-off the Games on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Sask time.
