Two provincial curling spiels took over the Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre on the weekend.

Moose Jaw’s Lorraine Arguin was able to walk away from the Senior Women’s Q-Spiel #2 with one of the two spots at provincials thanks to a 7-6 win over Saskatoon’s Peggy Fernquist in the ‘C’ final.

The Arguin rink — which also includes third Donda Lee Deis, Shelly Urquhart and lead Connie Fritzler — won three straight game to secure the third of three spots at the senior women’s provincial championship.

“We’re very happy to get the provincial spot, we don’t have to go to Yorkton for another Q-Spiel, we get to go right to Tisdale,” said Arguin

“We had lots of tight games on the weekend and we had times when we really struggled, but overall we played seven games and that’s a lot of games for us old girls.”

The ‘C’ final came down to the final shot with Arguin throwing a perfect tapback on Fernquist’s shot rock to lock up the win.

“We wanted to try to keep the middle open so that I could get a draw in there and it was an open draw and the girls swept it right into the four-foot, so we were good,” said Arguin.

The game opened with Fernquist picking up a steal of two in the first, but Arguin answered back with four in the second to pull in front. The back-and-forth continued in the third when Fernquist picked up two more to tie the game at 4-4.

The two sides traded singles the rest of the way with Arguin scoring in the eighth for the win.

“That second end was a big end,” said Arguin. “It was a really good game.”

The 2018 Saskatchewan Senior Women’s Curling Provincial Championship will be hosted in Tisdale from Feb. 20-25.

The 2018 Men’s Southern Qualifier was also hosted in Moose Jaw over the weekend with Regina’s Randy Bryden securing the first qualifying spot with a 7-2 win over Estevan’s Wade St. Onge on Friday night.

The second qualifying spot was decided on Sunday with Regina’s Daniel Selke scoring three in the tenth to win 8-7 over Saskatoon’s Jason Ackerman.
