The Swift Current Rampage lost twice during the South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League season, both just so happen to be at the hands of the Moose Jaw Mustangs.

The Mustangs won the Midget Division Championship on Saturday, handing the Rampage an 8-3 loss at the Kinsmen Arena.

"Thank god that we were that one loss that they had (during the regular season), it gave us total confidence coming into this thing because we knew they weren't that unbeatable team," said Mustangs head coach Kyle Dalgarno.

It was a battle of attrition throughout the day as the teams played the semifinals and the finals in one day.

Moose Jaw scored a 6-3 win over the Regina Rush in the semifinal and then carried that momentum into the win over the Rampage.

"We battled through heat today, its a hot rink, but it almost played to our advantage because we play in this, we practice in this all year round, so it was a home court advantage," said Dalgarno.

Atley Calvert led the charge for the Mustangs in the win with four goals and five points, while Caelan Fitzpatrick and Kayde Shymko had a goal and three points each.

Calvert said the team really came together for their best games of the season on Saturday.

"They're a good team over there, but we just had the better night," said Calvert. "Our defence was huge and without our defence I don't think we would have won this game."

Moose Jaw held Swift Current off the board in the third period and limited the league's top team to just three goals in the championship game.

"It blew me away today, it was really fun to watch, the kids did what they were told, I laid it out for them as much as I could on the bench and they played it exactly how they needed to," said Dalgarno.

The Mustangs came out firing in the final, scoring three goals in the opening 5:55 and rolling to a 4-1 lead after one with three goals from Calvert and one from Fitzpatrick.

Moose Jaw stayed in front by three in the second period as the teams traded two goals each with Shymko and Calvert finding the back of the net in the frame.

Chris Otterson and Kirk Mullen finished off the scoring for Moose Jaw in the third period to seal the win.

The Mustangs will now prepare for provincials coming in a few weeks, July 6-8, in Estevan.
