The Moose Jaw Midget AA Mavericks hung with one of the South Saskatchewan Female Hockey League’s top teams for two periods, but couldn’t finish the deal in the third.

The Swift Current Broncos scored four goals in the third period to skate to a 6-3 win over the Mavericks on Thursday night at the Bert Hunt Arena.

Moose Jaw trailed 2-1 after the first period. Josie Calwell scored a pair of goals to give Swift Current an early two-goal lead, but Mikayla Anderson found the back of the net with 3:20 to go in the first to get the Mavericks on the board.

That momentum carried over to the second period where Myra Szabo scored for the Mavericks just 1:11 into the frame to tie the game up at 2-2, which is how it stayed for the rest of the frame.

Calwell completed the hat trick for the Broncos early in the third to put them in front 3-2 and that would be as close as Moose Jaw got for the rest of the game.

Jenny Hope made it 4-2 for Swift Current with a power play goal just before the midway point of the third. Talia King pulled the Mavericks back within one with 6:45 to play, but the Broncos picked up two goals in the final 2:37 to seal the win.

Moose Jaw outshot Swift current 30-28 in the game with Shakara Chutskoff turning away 22 shots in the loss.

The Mavericks are now 4-6-0 on the year, while the Broncos improve to 8-4-0, which has them in second place overall.

Next action for Moose Jaw is coming up on Saturday when they host the Regina Capitals at the Kinsmen Arena. Puck drops at 3:15 p.m.
