The Moose Jaw Rotary Track Club sent seven athletes to the University of Saskatchewan’s Sled Dog meet this past weekend and they were able to bring back some hardware.

“They did fantastic,” said coach Scott Mitchell. “We had lots of personal bests and even a few medal finishers.”

Akoul Riak was the top performer from the local club as she captured a gold medal in the midget girls 800-metre with a time of 2:25.53. Teammate Neleah Schauenberg picked up a 10th place finish in the race.

Riak also picked up a silver medal in the 300m with a time of 44.53 seconds, which was just under two seconds behind the winner Savannah Sutherland. Schauenberg was 10th in that race as well, while Vera Gauvin came in 11th.

Jayden Palaschuk was also able to pick-up a silver medal, placing second in the bantam girls 800-metre. She posted a time of 2:37.52, which was six seconds behind Libby Dunn, who took gold.

“It’s encouraging to see that everyone is moving forward,” said Mitchell. “Some of the kids have run a little bit more, so personal bests are going to be harder to get, but it’s good to see some success individually and on the podium as well.”

Gauvin earned a sixth place finish in the midget girls 1,200m with a time of 4:55.11.

In the youth boys 60m, Moose Jaw’s Kienan Kleisinger placed fifth with a time of 7.64 seconds.  Kleisinger also placed eighth in the 300m, while fellow Rotary Track Club member Morgan Kilgour was 10th.

Kilgour also claimed a fifth place finish in the 600m.

Kal McGillis just missed the podium in the senior boys 3,000m with a time of 10:13.08. He also finished 15th in the 1,500m with a time of 4:36.72.

This is the first season for the returning Rotary Track Club and Mitchell said that the kids are really enjoying competing, and training, in the winter.

“Overall it’s been really positive and it’s showing in the results,” he said.

The club will be back on the track for the Regina Indoor Games on Feb. 9-10.

“We’ll be looking to build on what we had going in Saskatoon this past weekend,” said Mitchell.
