19 of Moose Jaw's best track and field stars are competing this weekend in Saskatoon at the University of Saskatchewan Sled Dog Open.

The indoor event will be the first of the new year for the Moose Jaw Rotary Track Team and Head Coach Scott Mitchell believes his team is going to find the podium in a number of events.

"I think we're going to have a lot of success. Our main goal is just to improve on the previous performance. And I think if we can do that, we'll be competing for a bunch of different medals."

Mitchell says a couple of those medals should come courtesy of Kienan Kleisinger, who will be competing in both the 60-meter and 300-meter race. "He should be right at the front of both of his events."

Jayden Palaschuk is someone else who Mitchell thinks will have a strong weekend. Last year at this event, Palashuck won silver in the Bantam Girls 800-meter and will be looking to do more of the same this weekend as she generates interest from two Saskatchewan universities.

"This event is very well attended by coaches from both the U of S and the U of R. So it's a great opportunity for some of these athletes to get some exposure."

The 49th annual running of the Sled Dog Open wraps up Saturday at the Saskatoon Field House.
