It wasn’t a banner night for two of Moose Jaw’s high school girls soccer teams on Tuesday as the Vanier Spirits and Peacock Tornadoes both suffered lopsided losses.

Vanier fell 7-1 to the Weyburn Eagles, while Peacock dropped a 10-0 game to the Swift Current Ardens in a pair of games at Sunningdale Fields on Tuesday afternoon.

“We started off strong, but as we get going we get too overconfident and start to lose ourselves,” said Vanier’s Kennedy Clark after the loss.

Claire Astrologo had the lone goal in the loss for Vanier, while Weyburn’s Hailey Neiszner had a hat trick in the first half. Reece Pittman scored a pair of goals and Alexi Siourinis and Meagan Dutchak picked up a goal each in the second half.

After starting the season with a pair of wins over Central and Peacock, and finishing SoccerFest on a three-game winning streak, Vanier’s Olivia Moyse said the team will learn from this loss.

“We have to go back to practice tomorrow and we’ve got a lot of stuff to work on,” she said. “We started off on a high this season, but this put us back in place, we’ve got some work to do.”

The Tornadoes were also coming off a strong finish at SoccerFest that saw them win a pair of games on Saturday.

They knew going into the game that they were facing a tough test against the perennial league champion Ardens.

Peacock senior Allison Billy said the team struggled early against Swift Current’s attack and saw some areas where they need work.

“Even by the second half, we got it together and they weren’t shooting as much as they were before,” said Billy. “In the first half, they were able to get a lot of shots, but in the second half, we picked it up.”

M.J. Anderson led the charge for the Ardens in the win with four goals, while Allison Wall picked up a pair and Ilyssa Dyck and Jannae Carlson also found the back of the net in the win.

With a young and inexperienced team, Billy added that Peacock can take a lot from playing against Swift Current and they’re making good progress this season.

“Today was an off-day and Swift Current is a very strong team, but our development is going better than expected,” said Billy.

The league is back on the field on Thursday with Peacock travelling to Weyburn and Central heading to Swift Current.
