Moose Jaw Warriors defenceman Daemon Hunt is taking part in Team Canada's virtual U20 world junior camp this year.

Hunt was a late addition to the 45-player camp but he's thrilled to be a part of the process that looks to select the players who will wear the Canadian jersey.

Hunt described to Warriors director of communications James Gallo what it feels like to be a part of this.

"Growing up, every kid dreams of playing for Hockey Canada and Team Canada, and just wearing that jersey every night when I'm with Team Canada, it's a really special feeling," Hunt said. "I'm proud of myself and my family and I've worked really hard to get to where I am today. It's extremely humbling."

Hunt said that every Christmas, he would go to his grandmother's place to watch the tournament on TV. Hunt himself has gotten a taste of international hockey at the U18 Hlinka Gretzky Cup last summer and the World Under-17 Challenge in 2018.

This year's development program is going to involve a lot of things that they would normally do, but online only.

"I know we have some team-builders, and I'm pretty sure we've got some workouts and warmups kinda stuff like that, so it's definitely a little bit different," he said. "And then there's going to be one on one meetings with the coaching staff. We've got lots of video to go through to get to know the systems and everything. It'll be a good process and I'm just really excited to get that going on."

The camp goes until July 31. It's online, so it's going to be a different kind of camp than most others he's been to.

"I think for me when you're in person and you have to play and you're forced to perform, and you're actually doing activities, but when it's on the computer like this you have to be a lot sharper mentally," said Hunt. "I think keeping that focus for me is going to be key. You can kind of daze off if you're in front of a laptop most of the day. I think just practicing mental habits and keeping mentally sharp."

While there's still a long way to go when it comes to team selection and if they'll even be allowed to play the games, the World Juniors are scheduled to begin December 26 in Red Deer and Edmonton.
