Quinton Howden and Team Canada opened the 2018 Winter Olympics in convincing fashion thanks to a 5-1 win over Switzerland on Thursday.

René Bourque and Wojtek Wolski scored twice each, while Derek Roy added three helpers and Chris Lee assisted on a pair for Canada in the round robin opening win.

Bourque scored 2:57 into the game and then Maxim Noreau added a power play goal less than five minutes later to make it 2-0 for Canada after one.

Just five minutes into the second, Bourque picked up his second and then 52 seconds later Wolski made it a four-goal lead for the Canadians after two.

Switzerland got on the board midway through the third and then Wolski fired a shot into an empty net late in the game to seal the win for Canada.

Ben Scrivens turned away 28 shots to pick up the win in goal as Canada was outshot 29-27 in the game.

The Canadians will return to the ice on Friday night at 9:10 p.m. Saskatchewan time to take on the Czech Republic.

The Canadian women’s hockey team improved to 3-0 with a 2-1 win over the United States on Wednesday night in their final round robin game. Canada is off now until the semifinal on Monday.

Canada’s medal total sits at 13 after they collected a gold, silver and bronze over the past day at the games.
