Hundreds of athletes descended on Peacock Collegiate over the weekend for the South Saskatchewan Wrestling Tournament.

The Moose Jaw Kinsmen Wrestling Club put together a stellar performance on their home mats, collecting 11 medals during the high school tournament on Saturday and 30 medals during Sunday’s youth tournament.

"The hard work that the kids and coaches have put in this year so far is really starting to show itself halfway through the season and the kids are feeling confident heading into the final two tournaments of the year," said Coach Chris Kell.

Moose Jaw wrestlers secured two gold in the Elite division during the high school tournament on Saturday.

Peacock's Liam Vargo earned gold in the Elite Male 56-kilogram division. He said he's walking away very pleased with how he was able to wrestle.

"I felt it went phenomenal, I got two points scored on me the entire tournament, pretty happy about that," he said. "I’m thinking that I might move up a weight class for more experience, but overall, it went great."

Peacock's Dylan Yamniuk also picked up gold in the Elite Male 69kg division.

Ethan La Rose in the Elite Male 73kg division, Justin Wiens in the Elite Male 62kg division and Kyle Yamniuk in the Elite Male 62kg division -- all from Peacock -- took home silver medals.

Central's Alexis Bradish in the Novice Female 61-63 division and Vanier’s Ryann Handley in the Novice Female 59-60 division picked up gold medals.

Peacock grade nine Sydnee Christmann is in her first year of wrestling and she said she's really happy with how she's been progressing after collecting a silver medal in the Novice Female 65-68 division.

"I felt I did pretty good, better than the last tournament and especially better than the first one," she said. "I'm growing stronger and stronger each time."

Christmann was inspired to take up the sport during the Peacock Award Banquet last year. "It's really fun and I'm trying to get my hockey teammates into wrestling," she said.

Central's Tanner Stelwager in the Novice Male 68-70 division and Jordy Bourage in the Novice Male 102-103 division also picked up silver medals.

Samuel Eros from Central also collected a bronze medal in the Novice Male 66-69 division.

During the youth tournament on Sunday, Moose Jaw wrestlers captured 14 gold, eight silver and eight bronze medals. Click here for full results.
