Cheer Infinity Athletics have some new banners to hang after a successful showing at the Best of the West Cheerleading Championships in Regina last weekend.

The local teams won five first-place banners, three second-place and one third-place, while the Cheer Infinity Mini Starbursts also won the Mini Grand Champion title, receiving the highest score of the mini age division.

"Our youngest athletes came together really well, they got first in their division out of four teams and Grand Champion, which is a huge accomplishment for those little ones, it's the biggest title that you can get for a division, so that was pretty exciting," said Melissa Marzolf, coach with Cheer Infinity Athletics.

Seven-year-old Mya Pilloud was a part of the Mini Starbursts team and she came away very proud of how they competed.

"It felt really good," she said. "We practiced hard and we worked extra hard on our floor and that got us Grand Champion."

Marzolf added that this win will help those young cheerleaders build confidence moving forward.

"It's huge," she said. "The kids didn't really know what it meant until their parents explained it to them, but they were just so excited about all the work that they put in and that they could bring home that banner to the gym, it's a pretty big thing for those young kids."

Teams from around Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba were on hand for the competition.

14-year-old Emalee Steeves and her teammates picked up a second-place finish in the pom competition. She said she's happy with how they finished.

"You have to try your best and be happy with whatever you get because you're doing your best and you're having fun," said Steeves.

"Our team has lost some people, but we've really made comebacks with changing our routine and hitting everything properly and it's been really good for us because we've been working together as a team."

The success at the Best of the West competition came on the heels of another stellar showing for Cheer Infinity Athletics at the Ice Breaker Cheer and Dance Championship where their 11 teams collected six first-place banners and four second-place.

Marzolf said the teams are performing at a high level right now, "To see all of our kids from Tinys up to our Seniors hit that floor, show their excitement and love for the sport on the mat was great to see, they all come together as a team and a family," she said.

Coming up in March, the club will be heading to the Warman Cheer Classic, which is the biggest competition in Saskatchewan with over 170 teams and 2,200 athletes.
