The Moose Jaw Generals had a better season than last year but they still weren’t able to make it to the playoffs.

Generals head coach and general manager Ray Wareham, whose team went 17-24-2-1 during the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League regular season, felt his team struggled with consistency.

“We just played really good at times, and then not so good at other times,” said Wareham. “That’s the most disappointing part, we just couldn’t find the consistency, particularly the middle part of the season.”

Wareham said the team’s potent offensive line of Casey McDonald, Evan Sare and Cody Davis played very well, especially after Christmas.

“That was encouraging, but it was disappointing not making the playoffs,” said Wareham. “That was our goal. But nothing we can do about it now.”

Wednesday night, the Generals finished the regular season with an 8-2 win over the Beardy’s Blackhawks at Mosaic Place. The game was close at 4-2 Generals after the second period, until a four goal outburst by the home team in the third period. Brendan Kemp scored a pair in the third, with Davis and McDonald picking up the other goals.

Wareham said the players were disappointed that the season was over, but all of the players are better now than they were at the start of their midget careers.

“Ultimately that’s the goal at our level,” Wareham said. “Of course, we want to win just as bad as everyone else. But it is a developmental league, and we feel like our players are all better players leaving us. So in that aspect, we did our jobs, we just failed to make the playoffs.”
