Moose Jaw Generals goaltenders Jake Davidson and Ethan Hein have went above and beyond over the past few months.

The goalie duo has been hitting the ice once a week with goalies from Moose Jaw Minor Hockey to lend some tips of the trade.

“They reached out to us and asked if we’d come out once for the goalie clinic, so we were just going to do it once, but then we really enjoyed it and it started to become a regular thing,” said Davidson. “The kids really enjoyed it and we really enjoyed it.”

Davidson and Hein both needed to complete some community service for their Christian Ethics class at Vanier Collegiate, which spurred the first trip, but they enjoyed working with the young goalies so much the they continued to attend the sessions.

Dave Beisal runs the goalie development sessions for Moose Jaw Minor Hockey and he said that both players did more than he could have ever asked for.

“They were more than what I expected,” he said. “I was expecting the kids to be shy and Ethan and Jake to be shy, but it was the exact opposite, we had so much fun with the kids and when it came to the development part, they were excellent.

“You don’t see young guys like that come in and do what they did, Ethan and Jake were themselves and they made it so much fun for the kids. I can’t thank them enough for helping out.”

The majority of the goalies taking part in the clinics are peewee-aged or younger and just starting out as netminders. Hein said that they focused on strengthening the basics for the kids.

“We made sure they’re having fun and focusing on small skating fundamentals, so that they can take it to their leagues,” said the 15-year-old Calgary Hitmen prospect.

Davidson added that working on the basics with the kids also gave them a chance to refresh for themselves over the course of a long season.

“It’s always good to go back to basics, whenever I’m struggling or Ethan is struggling, I tell him to focus on the basics in practice, so when we work with the kids, it’s just natural,” said Davidson, who was originally a fourth round pick of the Hitmen.

It hasn’t been the season that the Generals were hoping for this year as they will miss the post-season.

Davidson, a 17-year-old in his final Midget AAA season, has split time in goal throughout the season with Hein. Davidson said that they’ve grown pretty close over the course of the year.

“He lives close to me, so I drive him around and we’re got to know each other pretty well, he’s a really good guy and a really good goalie, so it’s been awesome,” said Davidson, who has a 6-15-0 record with a 3.17 goals against average and a 0.913 save percentage this season.

Hein has went 1-14-0 in his first season of Midget AAA hockey, posting a 4.51 goals against average and a 0.876 save percentage. He said the team has remained positive through their struggles this season with a hope of the work paying off next year.

“I feel like I started off slow, but I’ve been really improving my game and I feel like I’m playing pretty well right now,” said Hein. “We have possibly 18-19 guys back next year, so we should be able to make a run and win some games.”

Hein and Davidson won’t be able to attend the last few sessions of the goalie clinic as they close out the year with the Generals.

The Generals are back on the ice on Thursday night to host the Notre Dame Argos. Puck drops at 7 p.m. at Mosaic Place.
