The third time was a charm for the Central Cyclones at Hoopla.

After falling short in back-to-back provincial finals, the Cyclones put together a dominating effort in the 4A Boys championship game at Hoopla 2019 in Saskatoon on Saturday. They beat their nemesis, the Weyburn Eagles, 98-59, to capture the title and finish off an incredible run.

"This feels unreal, I can't even describe this feeling, this is probably one of the best things that I've ever felt in my life," said Central senior Ethan Johnson after the win.

"This is awesome, it's so nice, it’s such a relief to win the game," added Riley Seaborn, who is also among the group of seven seniors for the Cyclones.

This championship caps off an incredible run over three seasons for that group, who now have a provincial gold medal and two silver medals. The Cyclones posted a 29-5 overall record this season on their way to the provincial championship.

"A lot of us started playing together in grade two, most of us have been together since at least grade nine, I go to school every day with these kids, these are my brothers, nothing better, honestly, this is the best group of people to win it with," said Cyclones guard Kyle Boughen, who posted 12 points in the win.

After losing to Weyburn in the 2017 and 2018 provincial finals, Central made no mistake this time around, taking early control of the game and keeping their foot down on the pedal throughout the four quarters.

"We knew what happened the last couple of years, they got up on us quick, so we knew that we had to bring it just as the game started and we did that," said Crozier Holmes.

Jaxson Brownell led Central with 20 points in the final. He said their play at both ends of the court was the biggest key to the victory, "Everyone was talking, hands up and that's what got it done for us, our defence led into everything," he said.

"We finally did it, we finally got it done and for all the grade 12s to be on the floor together [at the end of the game], it was the best feeling the world," Brownell added.

Central used the fast break to take a 23-17 lead after the first quarter and then they extended that advantage to 47-31 by halftime.

The Cyclones continued to pull away from the Eagles in the third quarter, moving in front 71-50 heading into the fourth where they outscored Weyburn 27-9 to finish off the championship.

"This group of kids, it's just a matter of where do we want to go and at what time," said Head Coach Ryan Boughen. "They're very unselfish, we did that and worked well for us, and the way we played team defence, is what it’s all about for us, we made team stops together."

Seaborn, Johnson, Boughen, Brownell, Holmes, Fharis Ebet and Hardill Khubber make up Central's group of seniors. Ryan Boughen said it's special to see them finish off their run together as champions.

"We're just so happy for these kids, they've worked so hard, it’s just awesome," he said.

This is seventh basketball provincial championship for Central and the first since 2001. It’s the first provincial title won by a Moose Jaw boys team since Peacock in 2014.
