The Cornerstone Falcons senior boys’ volleyball team capped off an impressive season with the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association’s sportsmanship award.

The team received the banner Friday, as they were chosen as the 2A boys’ volleyball team that best exemplified good sportsmanship at this year’s provincial championship.

Head coach Cam Lewis says he and has players are really excited about the award.

“These are a great group of young men that are on the team,” Lewis said. “They really are great kids and I think it was great that they were able to show that both in losing and winning and be acknowledged for it, so they are extremely proud of it.”

Winning the award is nothing new to Cornerstone Christian School.

Lewis says the school has won the sportsmanship award several times in the past and this is the second time and three years they’ve received the award.

“I think it just speaks very well of the school that they’ve won this award several times and twice in the last three years,” Lewis said.

“It’s pretty impressive really that this is good character that they promote and I’m proud to be a part of it.”

The award finishes off a season that saw the Falcons win their conference to qualify for provincials. They would bow out of the provincial tournament in the quarter-finals.

Lewis said his team made the playoffs in almost every tournament they competed in, including one tournament win.

In city league play, Cornerstone finished in a three-way tie for second place before losing out to 4A provincial champions Vanier.

“We are the smallest school in the city and yet I think we compete quite well here and we had a really good season,” Lewis said.
