The starting quarterback position is still an open competition at Saskatchewan Roughriders' training camp, but over the first few days of camp, all eyes are on #17.

Zach Collaros was the biggest offseason acquisition for the Riders and if everything goes according to plan, he should be the team's opening day starter on June 15.

Collaros feels he's been able to settle in pretty quickly with the Riders.

"It was awesome just playing football today and getting out there and talking to Duron (Carter), Bakhari (Grant) and Naaman (Roosevelt) and the different looks that Coach (Chris) Jones gives us and trying to figure out what we're going to do against that," said Collaros after the Riders' first practice of training camp on Sunday in Saskatoon.

The Riders have a loaded receiving core with the players that Collaros mentioned and many more giving the new quarterback plenty to work with.

Collaros said he's excited to see what they can do together, "Coach Jones said we had a good day today, but we've got a long way to go and a ton of potential, our ceiling is very high, so that's the exciting point, being able to come out here with these guys everyday and try to get better," he said.

After four seasons in Hamilton, Collaros will have some work to do build chemistry with the Riders' receiving core, but he said that with the talent that they have out there it won't be hard.

"I'm a big rep guy, whether its mental or getting the physical reps and the more reps that we can get, the better off that we'll be, especially against the different looks that we'll get and Coach Jones throws a lot of them at us during practice," said Collaros.

"Obviously during the offseason, just trying to get back into this playbook and learn the offence, I watched (film on the receivers) but not methodically one guy at a time. The on-field things and communication is what gets guys to the next level and that's something that we've got to work on."

Before any of that can happen, Collaros has to win the job. He enters camp in a battle with Brandon Bridge, who resigned with the Riders in the offseason with the purpose of starting.

Jones said they're just getting started on deciding who will be under centre for them in Week 1, "We will evaluate every single position on our football team, everything is graded, nothing has anything to do with money or anything else, everything is evaluated on paper and numbers and that's what we do," he said.

Collaros has struggled over the past two seasons leading to his exit from Hamilton. He said he knows that all eyes are on him here in Saskatchewan to see how he bounces back.

“I've only been in the province since (last week) and I've ran into a lot of Rider fans and been able to interact with them and it's been great," he said. "This is a tough place to play for sure, but the Rider faithful were always good to me and I'm really excited to be on their team now."

The Riders continue training camp this week in Saskatoon. They will head to Edmonton on the weekend for a preseason matchup with the Eskimos on Sunday.

Roster Moves… The Riders made a couple of big roster moves on Tuesday as they released veteran defensive back John Ojo, who had signed a two-year deal with the Riders in March. They also released international defensive lineman Nick James, while national DL Eddie Steele was activated from the suspended list.

Harty suffers serious injury… Another offseason acquisition for the Riders may have had his season cut short, Canadian receiver Jake Harty reportedly suffered a torn ACL on the first day of training camp, according to 3-Down Nation’s Justin Dunk.
