There are still some spots open for a hockey clinic in Assiniboia next week.

Darren Martens is a former SJHL and University of Regina player with experience playing the ECHL and Germany.

The Tactical Edge Hockey Camp is for two different minor hockey age groups for kids in the area.

“It’s just kind of a kickstarter camp for people in the area for their kids to work on their edge work and get their feet back under them before the season starts,” said Martens. “Skating is very important.”

Martens said there will be puck-handling and shooting at the camp, but that won’t be the only focus.

“The focus will be mostly skating (and) tight turns,” he said. “I’m probably going to emphasize on turns because for some reason kids have problems doing tight turns.”

A gifted skater, Martens is happy to give from his field of expertise.

“I just wanted to pass on the knowledge of that to the kids,” he said. “I hope that they all listen and take in the advice.”

The two age groups are ages six to nine and 10 to 13. The camp runs Oct. 7-10 but there are still a few spots available.

“If they’re interested, I won’t turn them away.”
