The Central Cyclones are back on top in the Moose Jaw High School Boys Soccer League.

Nicolas Butterfield scored a hat-trick for the Cyclones as they beat the Swift Current Colts, 4-1, at Sunningdale Field in the championship game on Tuesday.

"We had a lot of hard practices, fitness days and that stuff, and I feel like it really worked out, in the end, they were more tired than us, so it really paid off," said Central senior Fharis Ebet.

The Colts were the two-time defending league champions and finished in first place during the regular season, but the Cyclones came out strong right from the start of the game and put together a solid game.

"The big part of our win was they beat us last time, so we had more energy coming into this game," said Ebet.

Butterfield scored twice in the first half, while Mohammed Al Saeed also found the back of the net for Central as they built up a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.

Butterfield completed the hat trick early in the second half to give the Cyclones some more breathing room.

Matt Epp had the lone goal for Swift Current in the loss.

"The boys really improved over the year and really came together for this game, it was really nice to watch," said Central coach Jason Brown.

"They’re a good group of kids, just a really good group of kids, they’re buying into what we’re selling and they’re trying hard to improve themselves."

The Cyclones will now host the 2A boys' soccer regional championship this weekend along with the Peacock Tornadoes and Vanier Vikings. Peacock takes on LCBI/Outlook at 1 p.m. Central faces Vanier at 3 p.m. on Friday in the semifinals. Click here for the full schedule.

Swift Current Continues Dynasty

The Swift Current Ardens’ dynasty reached the decade mark on Tuesday as they beat the Weyburn Eagles, 5-2, to win their 10th straight Moose Jaw High School Girls Soccer League championship.

This year’s title win is a little sweeter for the Ardens as they were given a good challenge from the Eagles, who ended their 95-game winning streak during the regular season.

"We really wanted redemption for the first game that we lost to them," said Ardens grade 11 MJ Anderson.

"We trained really hard at all our practices [after their loss to Weyburn] and tried to give 110 percent all the time."

After starting slow and sitting tied 1-1 at halftime, the Ardens exploded for four goals in the second half to pick up the win over the Eagles.

Bryn Haubrich and Jannae Carlson had two goals each for Swift Current, while Anderson added a goal and three points.

"It wasn’t the greatest, in the beginning, we were losing 1-0 and then in the second half, we picked it up and scored four goals and came out on top," said Anderson.

The Moose Jaw teams will be back on the soccer pitch this weekend to host the 2A girls' regional championship. Central, Peacock and Vanier will host Estevan with the semifinals going on Friday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Sunningdale Field. Click here for the full schedule.
