Braving cold, snow, and wind, Central senior Ray-Lyn Schmidt found the podium over the weekend at the 2018 SHSAA golf provincial championship in North Battleford.

Schmidt fired a two-round total of 186 to collect the bronze medal on Saturday finishing behind gold medal winner Lauren Fox from Creighton Community School and Carey McLean of Lumsden School in second place.

The Assiniboia girls came away with gold with a two-day total of 422, which gave them a 38-shot win over Esterhazy.

The opening round was played with snow falling throughout the round and the players had to battle through thick snow to finish their round. Schmidt said it was a challenge, but a fun experience to play in that type of weather.

"It wasn't something that I've done before so it was actually very, very difficult and an experience for sure, but honestly, it was kind of fun to try to play in that and compete in that type of situation and that kind of weather," said Schmidt.

"I tried to stay positive and focused and just say to myself that I have to hit this ball even though it's like a snowball."

Schmidt shot an opening round 92 on Friday to sit in third place, nine shots back of Fox.

The snow stopped for Saturday's round, but the temperature dipped to minus-two with a strong wind. Schmidt managed to shoot a 94 to stay on the podium in third place, five shots clear of Turtleford's Devrie Bloom in fourth.

"I think I could have shot a bit better, but just with the conditions, I did get a little negative and lose some focus, but during the end of the round, I picked it up and started playing better," said Schmidt on her weekend.

This is the second provincial medal in four trips to provincials for Schmidt, who won gold in 2016 and finished just off the podium in grade nine and last year. She also won the city and district championships in all four years of high school.

"I'm happy to be able to walk away with winning provincials in grade 10 and getting third in provincials for my grade 12 year," she said.

Estevan’s Jace Carlisle won gold in the male competition, edging teammate Chase Gedak by one shot.
