The Central Cyclones were given a good test by the Peacock Tornadoes, but were able to survive for a 4-2 win in the Moose Jaw High School Girls Soccer League quarterfinal on Tuesday.

“We played pretty well, but need to work on finishing,” said Central’s Ariet Okouri after the win.

The Cyclones and Tornadoes battled through a tight first half with Central taking a 3-2 lead into the halftime break.

In the second half, the Cyclones were able to score late to extend their lead to two goals, but they felt that they left some chances on the field and could have done a better job of sealing the win.

“We need to work on a lot of things, like when we cross the ball, get on the end of it, there’s lots of little things like that,” said Central’s Sydney Booth.

“We took every opportunity we had but just couldn’t finish them off,” added Okouri.

Didumo Omot, Jayme Puersten and Sabah Mohammed scored in the first half for the Cyclones, while Junea Wildermann added the game-sealing goal in the second half.

A pair of goals by Allison Billy got the Tornadoes on the board in the first half as they stayed close with the Cyclones.  Peacock was able to generate some chances in the second half, but couldn’t capitalize.

“For the most part, we played really well,” said Peacock’s Katherine McDougall.  “We played a pretty even game and I’m proud of the girls.

The Tornadoes are now done in league play with the loss and will turn their focus to finding success at regionals next weekend.  McDougall said the team is happy with the progress that they’ve showed over the course of the year and want to keep building over the next few weeks.

“From the start of the year now, we’ve got to know each other better and started to actually play the game well, so I’m excited for regionals,” she said.

The Cyclones will now face the tough test of going up against the eight-time defending league champion Swift Current Ardens in the semifinals on Thursday.

“We always go into a game against Swift Current hoping for the best, trying our best and playing our game and see what outcome happens,” said Okouri.  “We’re going to try to pull off the upset.”

Central and Swift Current meet in one semifinal, while the Vanier Spirits go up against the Weyburn Eagles in the other semi.  Both games go at 4 p.m. Thursday at Sunningdale Field.
