The Caronport Cougars continued to roll over the competition in the Moose Jaw High School Senior Girls Volleyball League on Thursday night.

The Cougars went into Peacock and beat the Toilers in four sets (25-6, 25-10, 18-25, 25-18) to remain undefeated on the season.

“We’re where we want to be at this time of year,” said Caronport head coach Derek Zacharias. “We had a really good tournament last weekend at the (University of Saskatchewan), played well and the competition there really helped push us to the next level and so things are going pretty well.”

Caronport has won the past two league championships and they look primed for a third with a team that is dominating right now in the early part of the season.

Peacock coach Lorne Polupski is worried about the competitive balance in the league with the Cougars featuring a number of players from out of province.

“It’s a good team, they’re well coached, (Zacharias) is a great coach, but it’s almost like a private school like LeBoldus or Notre Dame, so it’s hard to compete,” said Polupski.

Polupski added that this is something that’s been happening more and more in recent years and he feels is hurting the league as the local schools look to develop their programs and taking chances away from other players in the community.

“I really feel bad for our high school teams because you can’t compete with that,” he said. “I’m not taking anything away from my kids, I love my girls and they’re turning into great volleyball players, but (Caronport is) already there.

“Think about it when you come to city final and you’ve got a really good team like Vanier does right now — they’ve got a great team and they deserve to be in that final. Our local teams deserve to be in that final where it’s our hometown kids.”

Polupski added that there is some positive to having so much talent on an opposing team as it helps improve their skill by going up against them.

Zacharias said he’s happy with the competition that they get from Moose Jaw schools throughout the season.

“We work on getting better, so we talk about specific things that we want to work on any match regardless of who we are playing,” he said. “Peacock is a good team, they served the ball well and you saw in the third set that we didn’t pass well and they put us in trouble, so the competition is good.”

In other senior volleyball action on Thursday night, the Peacock boys beat the Avonlea Eagles in three straight sets (25-19, 25-21, 25-18).

Over at Vanier, the Vikings and Spirits swept the Cornerstone Falcons. The Spirits won in four sets (25-8, 18-25, 25-18, 28-26) in the girls game and the Vikings prevailed in five sets (15-25, 25-15, 24-26, 25-18, 15-12) in the boys game.

The league returns to the court on Wednesday following the long weekend.
