It was a golden start to the season for two local lacrosse teams in Swift Current over the weekend.

The Moose Jaw Bantam and Midget Mustangs both walked away with gold medals from a season-opening tournament in Swift Current, rolling to undefeated records in the process.

They will both open their 2019 seasons in the South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League next week.

Defence Shines for Bantam Mustangs

The Bantam Mustangs weren't clicking on all cylinders offensively, but they locked down defensively over their four games in Swift Current.

"We played good, but we've still got a lot of room to improve," said Mustangs captain Rowan Calvert. "We've had a great group before so that just translate into that first tournament."

The Mustangs opened the tournament with two wins on Saturday, they beat the Swift Current Rampage TT, 6-2, and then they knocked off the Swift Current Rampage MW in a tight 2-1 battle.

In the final on Sunday, the Mustangs rolled to a 5-2 win over the Lethbridge Cudas to clinch the title.

"We weren't sure what we were up for but we went in there with a positive mindset and just worked hard," said Mustangs forward Carter Michaluk. "Beating an out-of-province team, now we know that we can take anyone."

This weekend was the first lacrosse action for Ashton Glova and he said it felt pretty good to come out on top in his first weekend, "First time playing lacrosse and you go to a tournament and you win, it feels pretty nice," he said. "It was a real eye-opener and it was just fun playing."

The Bantam Mustangs kick off their season next Tuesday when they travel into Regina.

Midget Mustangs Post Perfect Weekend

Three games in three days and all wins for the Midget Mustangs, as they went 3-0 on their way to the gold medal in Swift Current.

"We just played hard, went out there and did what needed to be done," said Mustangs forward Kael Nichols, who scored three times in the three games.

"We clicked pretty quickly, we have a lot of second years coming back."

Moose Jaw opened the tournament with a 5-1 win over the Swift Current Rampage on Friday. They followed that up with another 5-1 win over the Estevan Voltz on Saturday.

The Mustangs finished off the tournament with a 9-4 win over the Voltz on Sunday.

"The boys were going strong every single game," said Brydon Bell with the Mustangs, who scored twice over the weekend.

"Our defence has been stellar and we just need to work on offence over this little bit until the season starts and then we’ll be fine."

The Mustangs will get their season underway next Thursday in Regina.
