For the 16th straight year, the Moose Jawg Charity Road Race kicked off the Canada Day celebrations in the Friendly City on Saturday.

The annual five-kilometre and 10-kilometre race saw 375 runners descend on Wakamow Valley this year.

“The goal honestly is just to bring people together in a fun location and show off Wakamow Valley in Moose Jaw,” said Race Organizer Dawn Luhning, who has chaired the event since it’s inception.

The race serves double duty as it encourages locals to get outside and be active to start their Canada Day, but it also raises funds for the Moose Jaw Health Foundation with over $125,000 being raised over the first 15 years.

“I’m not sure what the total is yet for this year, but I’m hopeful that we’re going to be able to give back another $4,000 this year,” said Luhning.

For the third straight year, University of Regina Cougars runner Adam Strueby came out on top in the 5K race, winning in a time of 14:59.

Moose Jaw product Mike Tighe has won the Moose Jawg on a number of occasions, even setting the 10K record back in 2004. He again came out on top in the 2017 edition of the race with a time of 38:46.

“It was a good day for running, nice day with a little bit of cloud,” said Tighe.

“This race is super every year. It grows with the number of people that show up and there’s always some familiar faces, so I always look forward to coming back.”
