The Moose Jaw Warriors selected Morgan Rielly second overall in yesterday's WHL Bantam Draft. The West Vancouver native put up 52 points in 23 games for the Notre Dame Hounds last season.
Warriors General Manager Chad Lang says he didn't expect Rielly to be available.
"Well there was a little bit of surprise. There was a lot of speculation that Morgan Rielly, basically from Christmas on, was probably the guy that teams were talking about that was going to go first overall. We liked him from day one. When he was available we were extremely happy. You don't get many opportunities to add players of his caliber to your lineup."
The Warriors other draft picks were Andrew Johnson and Shayne Gwinner in the second round, Matthieu Vigier and Travis Brown in the fourth round, Brayden Cuthbert in the fifth, Jesse Gartland went in round six, while Colin Baudry and Tanner Eberle finished off the Tribe's draft day in the seventh round.
The first overall pick in the draft was Derrick Pouliot from Weyburn who went to the Portland Winter Hawks. The Kamloops Blazers took Brady Gaudet from Redvers 10th overall, Milestone's Joel Steve went to the Tri-City Americans in the sixth round, and the only Moose Jaw player to be drafted was Sean Whelan, who went to the Regina Pats in round 11.
