We still put some time and effort into it but not like we used to. The City of Moose Jaw letting us know the outdoor rinks will soon be good to go. Flooding will continue this week and the outdoor hockey season will be underway.
We're lucky if we have a neighbourhood community association with volunteers to open up the shacks. You'll find most of them locked up. It's likely one of the reasons we don't see more families out to play hockey.
You may remember, back in the 70s and into the 80s, we had city workers staffing those shacks. They were the people who looked after our parks in the summer. They'd open up around 4 o'clock and build a nice fire in the wood-burning stove. They'd bring their lunch pail and a thermos of hot coffee. They'd keep the ice nice and help the kids tie-up their skates.
The lights would stay on 'til 10 o'clock every night and then the rink would be cleaned and flooded. Every night.
Those were the days, my friend. We thought they'd never end.
