He's a 38 year old trial lawyer who was born in Scarborough, Ontario to immigrant parents from India.  He grew up in St. John's, Newfoundland and Windsor, Ontario.

After graduating from high school he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Western Ontario.  He got a law degree at York University.

He speaks three languages including English, French and Punjabi.

He describes himself, politically, as a progressive, social democrat.

They know all about him in Ontario where he's been a part of the provincial political scene for about 6 years.  We'll soon learn a lot more about him across the country, because Jagmeet Singh is the new leader of the federal New Democratic Party.

The NDP replaced Tom Mulcair this weekend.  Singh was elected leader on the first ballot, easily beating Charlie Angus, Niki Ashton and Guy Caron.

It'll be most interesting to see if Singh can help rejuvenate the NDP, which has just 44 of the 338 seats in the House of Commons.
