July the 4th.  It's a holiday in the United States.  Independence Day they call it.  It commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776.  Politicians of the day declared the 13 American colonies a new nation and it would be called the United States of America, breaking away from the British Empire.

I know many of us in Canada don't approve of the way the USA does business on the world stage and I, like many of you, get a little tired of their pretentious ways from time to time.

But, if I were to pick a country I wanted to share a border with - any country in the world - it would be the United States.

Why, you ask?  Well, military strength is the number one reason.  I feel safe in Canada and that is, in part, because we share our border with America.

I also like baseball and hot dogs and chocolate chip cookies, my microwave oven and Elvis Presley.  America gave us all of that.

Oh, and The Star Spangled Banner?  I love it.

God Bless America.
