Born January 2nd at 3:52 am, Moose Jaw's first baby of the New Year was born at the Dr. FH Wigmore Regional Hospital.

Parents Steven and Rachell Cruckshank are happy to say their new daughter was the firstborn in the Friendly City this year.

"Most of our family kind of had a feeling to was going to come [in the new year], our original due date was the 29th so it could have happened anytime after anyway," Steven Cruckshank said.

Both parents say more people than they were expecting are congratulating them on their new child.

They've received a few gift baskets and presents from local businesses and from the hospital, and Steven Cruckshank says they should be meeting Mayor Fraser Tolmie as well.

The new father explains what they plan to do next.

"Hopefully, try and get things settled at home. It was an emergency c-section in the end so, it's a matter of getting stuff set up now without having a second person there to help out."

For the mother, it's a time of recovery.

Never the less, little Astraea Raelynn Cruckshank came into the world healthy, weighing 6 pounds 13 ounces and heading home with a loving family.
