As seeding time approaches, producers will be looking at market prices and demand for the different kinds of crops. Bruce Burnett, Director of Weather and Market Analysis with the CWB says wheat prices have declined since hitting peak prices last year and adds they are also seeing a decline in production in Canada and around the world.

According to him, production of durum will be down globally, "Conditions especially in Europe were looking at some lower acreage there and Western Canada were forecasting that will see some lower acreage in the upcoming year.  Year on year we're going to see a drop in the order of 800,000 to 900,000 tons."

Burnett says a decrease in barley production is expected for this year, "Still above a five year average.  Production around 146 million tons down from 150 million tons last year.  In terms of our overall barley fundamentals it doesn't look all that positive on the feed barley side." Burnett adds that on the malting barley side, a decrease in production is also expected.
