The Moose Jaw Warriors have swept their three-game Alberta road trip, knocking off the top-three teams in the Central Division in four nights.

Moose Jaw saved their best for last, topping the division-leading Edmonton Oil Kings, 8-1, at Rogers Place on Tuesday night.

“Anytime you’re playing one of the top teams in the league, it’s a meaningful game… so it is real nice to see that,” Warriors assistant coach Gord Burnett said after the win.

“We played five guys together, we’re pretty connected, really happy for our group.”

The win is the fourth straight for the Warriors and puts the team in sole possession of fourth place in the Eastern Conference, two points ahead of Saskatoon.

Moose Jaw outscored the opposition 17-6 on the road trip.

“I thought we did a great job,” Burnett said. “We did a good job in the [offensive] zone, our [defence] were involved all night long, nice to some [defence] put some points on the board again.”

Brayden Yager had a career-high five points to lead the way for the Warriors, while Atley Calvert added two goals and Jagger Firkus posted a goal and three points in the win.

Warriors captain Daemon Hunt completed the Gordie Howe hat trick as well.

“Hopefully we can build off doing that against a real good team, we play another real good team coming up, so it’s important to have confidence going into that game back home,” Burnett said.

Hunt got the night started for the Warriors when he blasted home a one-timer on the power play just 3:47 into the game.

It was Hunt’s 11th of the season, tying him for the league lead among defencemen.

The Warriors added to the lead near the midway point of the first when Firkus followed up a rebound and scored his team-leading 25th of the season.

Edmonton cut into Moose Jaw’s lead to start the second period when Dylan Guenther found the back of the net 5:43 into the frame.

The Warriors didn’t let the Oil Kings take the momentum, however, and Brayden Yager scored back-to-back goals to extend Moose Jaw’s lead.

Yager’s first came off the rush on a nice feed from Firkus at the midway point of the second and then buried a rebound on the power play for his 20th of the year to make it 4-1 after two.

The Warriors came out of the gates firing in the third to put the game out of reach.

Calvert scored his first of the night at 2:11 and then just 13 seconds later, Majid Kaddoura wristed in his third of the season to make it 6-1.

Just under 11 minutes into the period, Calvert snapped home his second of the night and seventh of the year.

Thomas Tien finished off the scoring with his fourth of the season with just under four minutes to play, capping off the 8-1 win.

Carl Tetachuk made 23 saves to preserve the win, while the Warriors outshot Edmonton, 31-24 on the night.

Moose Jaw went 2-for-6 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill to win the special teams battle.

The Warriors will now return home for a busy weekend with East Division-leading Winnipeg in town on Friday and a battle against the rival Regina Pats on Saturday at Mosaic Place.
