Many residents in Moose Jaw are familiar with River park CampGround and the River Park Trail.

In honour of our former Premier, the campground and trail are being renamed as the Lorne Calvert Camp Ground and the Lorne Calver Loop.

"The government contacted us and said that this is one of the areas that Mr. Calvert cherished and would love to have part of the area, the walking, and the campground area (that) were very close to him. Those were areas that he used and (he) would love to have his name on them," said Todd Johnson, General Manager of Wakamow Valley.

The walking trail is laid out like a loop through the campground and reaches about 2.4 km.

Former Premier Calvert couldn't be happier, "Having the Campground in Wakamow bear our family name and a part of the trail is just delightful. It is so close to our home and those things that we love."

Calvert was born and raised in Moose Jaw. He served as an MLA for Moose Jaw Wakamow (formerly Moose Jaw South) from 1986-1999. During this time, he served as Minister of Health and Minister of Social Services. In 2001, Calvert was elected MLA for Saskatoon Riversdale and served as Saskatchewan's 13th Premier until 2007.

He says. "This recognition in Wakamow is particularly meaningful for myself and our family. Four generations of my family have grown up learning of life and God's creation within the valley."

The naming of the Lorne Calvert Campground and Lorne Calvert Loop is in keeping with the Government of Saskatchewan's Building/Landmark Dedication Policy. Under the policy, buildings or landmarks that do not already bear the name of a person can be named after former Premiers, except for the immediate past Premier.

Current Premier Scott Moe also recognized the name change, "Premier Calvert served not only the people of Moose Jaw but our entire province for over two decades," Premier Scott Moe said. "I'd like to thank him for his dedication to Saskatchewan and congratulate him on this fitting hometown tribute."

The ceremony for the name change along with a banner reveal will be scheduled for next spring.
